Weddings and flowers go hand-in-hand.Ever since the ancient Greeks where brides wore crowns of fresh flowers and plants, the two have been synonymous.
The bridal bouquet also had its beginnings in ancient times when the bride carried a bunch of fragrant herbs, often including bulbs of garlic, believed to ward off evil spirits.  Sage was also popular for wedding bouquets as it brought wisdom to the bridal party.  In the Victorian era, flowers were assigned their own meaning and brides often carried posies which conveyed a coded message for the groom. 
Also in Victorian England, a young girl would sprinkle petals ahead of the bridal party as they walked down the path to the church, which is where the name ‘flower girl’ originated.The reason for this was to make sure that the bride and groom were blessed with a happy life, filled with flowers. 
Nowadays, anything goes.From simple country bunches to elegant cascading centrepieces, the only limits to wedding flowers are imagination and budget.You will probably have a good idea as to what you want for your wedding flowers, but it’s advisable to talk to an experienced florist who will have sound, practical advice.
To suit their intended theme, many brides have definite ideas about what flowers they want.However, it is important to think about which flowers are in season.Flowers are a seasonal product, yet some wedding planners don’t take this into account.Selecting in-season flowers make sense…. and cents.
An experienced florist wil be able to use seasonal flowers to create whatever look you want.Just because tulips are out of season, doesn’t mean that your wedding will be a total flop !  There are so many varieties, colours and shapes of flowers, and so much can be done with interesting foliage, ribbon, fabric and other accessories. 
Ask your florist about what types of flowers are best for certain purposes.For example, a gardenia is not only beautiful but has a magnificent fragrance too.  However,  they are inclined to bruise and brown easily and won’t look good for long in a bouquet.Stephanotis has similar characteristics, with delicate, fragrant flowers.Many brides choose these blossoms for their bouquets, but the flowers tend to bruise and wilt when kept close to the body, so it’s actually not the most ideal choice.
Sarah Ennis, a florist in Perth, says the starting point is a good working relationship between the bride and the person doing the flowers.”An experienced florist will be able to offer practical advice on the prices of flowers,which ones are in season and which are the best varieties to complement the wedding theme.” 
Some of the most popular types of flowers used at weddings include roses, lilies, daisies, tulips and hydrangeas.   “However,” she says, “a February wedding with lots of roses can be an expensive choice as the price of roses increases significantly around Valentine’s Day, and the quality can be inconsistent.”
As a Perth florist, she has some good ideas on what flowers are best suited for a bride’s bouquet. If possible, it’s best if the florist can see what the wedding gown is to look like, plus a fabric sample so that the colours are matched.A small posy or single bloom is best for knee-length dresses while a trailing bouquet or tied bunch of longer stems is best suited to a full-length dress.A bouquet that draws attention to the centre of the body should be avoided by fuller-figured women, whilst a long, trailing bouquet will make a bride appear to be thinner and taller.
