Remodeling Your Home on a Budget With a Hammer Drill and Other Tools
Because times are tough economically, many homeowners have decided not to upgrade their home because it’s too costly. If you’re in that same financial state, you can rest easy that you can make your home look like new with a few enhancements without spending tons of money.
Make a Dramatic Change and Spend Less
Start with fundamentals when contemplating a renovation. Look at the ceilings, walls, and floors first. This is the basis for your remodel. If you have a “popcorn” ceiling, consider either repainting it a new, fresh color or hiring someone to resurface and retexurize it with a even pattern. Don’t forget to have a strong primer applied before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and choose a neutral shade that will compliment with light and earthy tones and will go with any décor. Make repairs to walls that have dents, nicks, or holes so they look like new again. Next, move on to the floor areas: are the flooring and baseboards in good repair? If they are, re-paint the baseboards a nice white color to make the home look modern and attractive. If you plan to tear out and lay new coverings on the floors, consider porcelain tiles, because they are easy on your wallet per square foot and look great much longer than carpet does. If you will be installing carpeting, choose a compact pile that is a shade of brown or beige so that stains will not be as visible and the carpet will be resilient against crushing for many years.
Save Money and Do It Yourself
Remodeling your bathrooms and kitchen are the wisest fixes you can put into your house. If the cabinetry is in good structural shape, consider either refinishing the existing cabinets or replacing them. If you will be re-facing them, get a good Makita drill and detach the hinges and handles from the cabinet doors to loosen them. If needed, you can purchase new cabinet facing from your local do-it-yourself store. For an even better money-saving renovation, choose to refinish the existing cabinets. Again, remove the doors from the cabinets and then apply a paint stripper to the existing finish and use a scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all trace of the old finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the beginning time with a spindle sander using medium-grit sandpaper. A finishing sanding should be done with a fine-grade sandpaper after that. Wipe off the sanding residue and then apply a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and finish it with 2-3 clear coats to protect the wood from water exposure.
How to Make an Impact Through Design
Upgrading your decorative items is an uncomplicated, but significant way to make your home look like new. You can find great deals at estate sales, second-hand shops, or on the Web which will save money. For even increased savings, make furniture pieces by hand. You can make a unique headboard, for example, with nothing more than two over-sized splindles or posts of wood, a wood lathe (you can rent this from someone), and a large rectangle of board made of wood. Cover the wood center portion with some batting, fabric, and modern upholstery pins for a new headboard that is eye-catching!
