New Materials For Teaching Kids Botany
Scientists are revising the system of classification of the plant kingdom, which can make the life of a biology teacher challenging. Once again, we must deal with a new system and an older system, while keeping the topic interesting and clear. Both of the classification systems may be found in children’s books, but the older system is much more common. This can make teaching the new system more challenging. Kingdoms of Life Connected is an important new book for teaching kids biology. Plant kingdom classification has changed from a system of 12 phyla to a system of branches that have no phyla or classes, only orders, families, genera, and species. The branches have names which help students with their understanding of plant diversity. The new system is based on phylogenetic relationships or a “tree of life” approach to classification. For example, the traditional plant classification system included a group called seedless vascular plants. The new classification system does not use this group designation, because club mosses are on a different branch than the ferns, whisk ferns, and horsetails.
Kingdoms of Life Connected will guide you through the Bryophytes, and steer you through the Tracheophytes (vascular plants) including both the Lycophytes (club mosses) and the Euphyliophytes (composed of monilophytes and spermatophytes). You may recognize the seed plants, the spermatophytes, which include gymnosperms and angiosperms.
A strong feature of Kingdoms of Life Connected is the regular use of beautiful photographs and clear, interesting diagrams to illustrate the text. There is also a section on presenting real plant specimens including how to order live or preserved specimens of phyla that are not available in your local environment. This is an excellent new biology text for a motivated teacher working with motivated students.
