Can I drive a nail in a large Cedar tree (2′ dia.) ?

I need to secure a fence and a nail in the tree and a cable from it to the fence would be the simplest way but I don’t want to damage the tree. Thanks

A tree that wide around should have a pretty thick bark. Try not to penetrate the cambium (the inner bark that grows with the tree), though as that could damage the tree and make it sap. Once a tree saps it invites all kinds of pests.
