How can I prune my bougainvillea topiary without causing it to not bloom?
A large bougainvillea topiary tree I purchased about 6 months ago is not blooming like it was when I bought it. At the time it was covered in blooms but now I’m lucky if I get even 1 every few weeks. I’ve heard that hard pruning can cause this but how else can I maintain the shape of the topiary without causing it to not bloom? I’ve purchased bougainvillea fertilizer but nothing changed. I do not water it and the tree otherwise appears very healthy. I’ve also noticed thorns on it too.

Thanks Laurie, I think you might be right. My suspicion is that it had just arrived @ Lowe’s when I purchased it and was likely shocked into blooming right before it shipped. Well, at least I know it’s not me. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
Bougainvilleas become leggy & have thick woody, thorny stems. They usually don’t bloom all season after purchase. You should prune it before it goes dormant. Does the bougainvillea fertilizer have a middle number that’s larger than the others? If you want blooms this yr., feed it something like bloom booster..
Bougainvillea blooms best in the short daylight periods of winter but can bloom on & off year round on new growth. You’ll need to keep it potted & maintain 60 degrees or warmer. Plants in greenhouses bloom heavily during the winter, while in hanging baskets. Bougainvillea’s foliage is sensitive if left out in 50 degree weather or below, but will survive down to mid 30′s after leaf drop. You can also bring it in the garage, put it back out in spring- say on a patio & have it refoliate in the spring!
