Fish Oil Vs Flax Seed Oil – Find Out Who the Winner Is
The winner of the fish oil vs flax seed oil debates often depend on who is doing the reviewing. Everyone has their own personal opinions. Supplement manufacturers always think that their opinions are the best. But, the consumer should really make the decision based on fact, not opinion. Here are the facts to consider.
1. There are different kinds of omega-3 fatty acids.
There are three omega-3 fatty acids that are known to be important. They are Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA and alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. Docosapentaenoic acid or DPA may be important, too. The jury is still out on that one.
It would make more sense to take a supplement that provides “more”. Flaxseeds provide only ALA, which is also present in cooking oils, walnuts, blackberries, kiwis and many other plant foods.

2. DHA is most important to the brain.
Supplementation is often recommended to people who suffer from various emotional disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. It is also recommended for kids and adults suffering from attention deficit disorder, with or without hyperactivity.
It is know that DHA is essential for normal brain development in infants, which is one reason that most infant formulas contain it. Human breast milk contains it, too.
For decades we have known that breast milk is better for babies than formula, but we could not explain exactly why, although there were many theories. Now, it is believed that DHA is the missing component of soy-based infant formulas and those made from cow’s milk. Neither soy nor cow’s milk contains DHA.

3. Researchers have not evaluated the heart benefits of flaxseed oil.

DHA and EPA supplements have been shown to lower triglycerides, improve HDL (good) cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, improve blood flow and prevent the formation of blood clots.
