Chinchilla Food Question?
I have Extreme! Fruit and nut Cockatiel. Its For cockatiels Love birds and Conures. It has a Combination for fruits, nuts, and Seeds. This is Whats In It: Papaya, Sunflower chips, Green Peas, Peanuts, Almonds, Carrots, Squash seed, Bannana, Lentils, Golden Rasins, Dates, Dark Raisins, Cantaloupe seed, Pumpkin Shelled, Apple Dices, sulfur dioxide.
So Is This Okay to Feed Her??
Bird food is for birds. Chinchilla food is not bird food, especially not something loaded with so much crap. If you fed your chin that on a regular basis, you would kill her. She would develop diarrhea, bloat, gut stasis, and God only knows what else — liver issues, kidney issues, skin issues.
Stick to feed that works and is safe for chins. That means a plain, pelleted food. No dried fruits, no dried veggies, no junk food, definitely nothing on the list above. There are several very good foods available for chins. A list of generally recommended foods are:
Nutrena Naturewise 16% rabbit
Purina Rabbit Chow (the jury is still out on this as it’s a new formula taking the place of PANR)
Tradition Chinchilla
APD Chinchilla
Oxbow Chinchilla
Mazuri Chinchilla
Mazuri is my least favorite. Some people have issues with loose stools using the Mazuri, others do great on it. As long as you have one of the foods listed above, which are all good nutritionally, then a lot of it becomes personal choice. I feed Nutrena and I like it. If I had my choice (location is an issue) I would prefer to use Tradition again.
Accepted treats:
Bite sized, nonsugared shredded wheats.
Dried rosehips, whole or crushed.
Dried organic rosebuds.
The occasional cheerio.
A pinch of old fashioned Quaker Oats (not quick oats).
Lots of wood chews: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34
Treats should always be given in moderation, 1-3 a week, but wood chews can be given at any time. Chins absolutely love them, especially the thicker barked woods.
You should also provide plenty of fresh, good quality timothy hay and/or hay cubes for your chin to munch on.
Please check out http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com and, in particular, read through the Diet and Nutrition section. It is actually very easy to take care of a chinchilla’s dietary needs, you just need to keep them away from junk like you listed above. Always remember with chins K.I.S.S. – keep it simple stupid. The more simple diets work great, no need to shove a bunch of stuff in it.
