Tips on Garden Seed

Garden seed, if purchased from a reliable source, will give you better crops in your vegetable garden and longer lasting blooms in your flower garden. The garden seed your purchase for your gardens should come from a reputable company that has been established for many, many years. Seeds purchased from any other company may also include weed seeds.

Most vegetables grow very well and will give a good crop if you can plant the seeds right into your tilled soil either in rows or hills. Some supplies that are going to be needed for your vegetable garden include the seeds, garden rake, garden hose, shovel, trowel, and watering can. You also want to be sure that you are not going to have any more frost because seeds that freeze will not survive. The majority of the vegetable seed packets give you all the information you need in regards to planting seeds in your area; for instance how deep to plant them, how far apart they need to be and the best ways for producing good results.

Planting seeds in rows means digging several furrows, as deep as the seed packet recommends, with your garden hoe. The larger the seed the deeper it gets planted. Small carrot seeds need only to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep but the larger bean seeds need to be at least 2 inches deep. Place the seeds as far apart as they should be in the channel then loosely cover with the back side of a rake or use your hands. Pat down or tamp the row of seeds just enough so the wind cannot blow away the soil. Thoroughly water the rows using a watering can or garden hose equipped with a fine-spray nozzle.

Hill planting entails gathering the soil to form individual mounds that are 3″ to 4″ high and 12″ to 18″ wide. The seed packet for your particular vegetable will let you know how high and wide the hills should be. To make a hole in the center of the mound you can use a stick or your finger as deep as it needs to be for planting that particular seed. Insert two or three seeds, as needed, into the hole and cover with soil. Press down on the mounds enough so the soil makes contact with the seeds. Completely water the hills in the same manner as for planting in rows.

When planting flower seeds it is probably better to start a few varieties indoors first and transplant them outdoors after the last frost. The flower seed packets will tell you how much time is needed for the seedlings indoors before you can transplant them out in your flower garden. Some flower packets recommend planting indoors six to eight weeks before you get the last frost. Some seeds can be planted outdoors such as zinnias or cosmos; if you want a head start plant them inside first. Geraniums, petunias, and licorice plants may take twelve weeks before they begin to sprout.

A good reason for seeding indoors is promoting germination by using heat and water; grow lights for seed growth; and air circulation and proper drainage to prevent “damping-off”. You can use an electric fan gently blowing over the surface of the soil during the day to eliminate “damping-off”. You will then need to “harden off” those tender seedlings a week to ten days before transplanting. Begin the “hardening off” by stopping fertilization, cut the amount of water by half, keep inside in a cooler space, let them have some direct sun and introduce some outdoor temperatures. You can begin this process by placing the seedlings outside during mid-day for about an hour and gradually increase the time. Do not leave them out in cold weather, heavy rain, or strong winds; be sure to bring them indoors for the night.

Prior to purchasing any seeds pick up any free garden seed catalogs you can find and look over the varieties of vegetable seed and flower seed packets that you might like to try your hand at growing. There may be some unusual flowers or vegetables you might like to try but always remember to use reliable companies when purchasing your garden seed.
