How do i plant strawberries without buying the plant, can i put just a SB in the ground?
Me and my wife would like to have strawberries for our garden and i have never planted strawberries before. I have a store bought case of strawberries and i don’t really want to go to a floral/garden store way out of town to buy a strawberrie plant(s) is there any way maybe that i could just put the strawberry/strawberries in the ground and go from there? Not sure, please help… Thanks =D
You can take the seeds from your strawberry and plant them. They will usually grow but the berries will be smaller than those you took the seeds from. It will also take them longer to produce berries; plants will produce the year they are set out whereas the seed-grown plants will take 2 or 3 years to produce. My strawberries tend to have seedlings each year from the berries I missed when harvesting the last crop. Since I usually stop picking once the harvest gets too low there may be as many as 15 or 20 berries left over. Each berry has between 50 and 150 seeds. This means I have a lot of seeds but, since not all will sprout, I end up with about 250 to 300 seedlings each year. Some of these get transplanted into pots so I can keep track of the number and quality of their fruit. Some are given away to family and friends if they prove to produce a sufficient quantity of good berries. Others are pulled and discarded as unsuitable producers. Still others die before producing anything to sample. Most are left in place and any berries they produce are harvested along with the others and used to make wine, jelly and preserves.
