Is Caring For Orchids As Easy As People Say?

Unfortunately, there exists a common misconception that growing and caring for orchids takes lots of work, and that it is hard to grow beautiful orchids.  The good news is that, with thousands of orchid species, anyone can find an orchid to grow and enjoy, even if they are novice gardeners.

What you will find is that if you can grow the average house or garden plant, you can get an orchid that anyone can grow. But, some orchids do have special requirements. Before you buy any orchid, be sure to learn about its needs, so you can determine if you have the necessary equipment and skills.  No other plant produces such special, fragile flowers as the orchid, and that is a big part of the appeal of caring for orchids. It is one of the things that make them such a popular house plant. If you give your orchid extremely good care, you can keep them blooming just as healthy as they were in the store.

For instance, in the event you bought or received an orchid from a store, it is probably a phaleanosis.  This is the popular white or purple orchids that are available due to the fact that they are easier to care for than some of the less common varieties of orchid plants.

Your orchid should bloom for around 3 months, perhaps more, if given the proper care. Place your orchid where it can get substantial amounts of light, which is typically near a window, or under appropriate grow lights. But you should avoid the midday sun which can be too harsh for these plants, so  aim to give your orchid morning and evening sunlight. Many experts recommend placing orchids in an east facing window, to catch the morning light.  If necessary, artificial light, placed about one foot about the orchid, and placed on a timer, is a great way to give your orchid the right amount and type of light.

For best results, keep your orchid’s environment between 55 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the weather gets to 90 or more, orchids tend to stop blooming. An orchid’s natural environment is humid, so make sure your orchid has the same, but don’t flood it if you want it to flower for you. Instead, water the plant once every ten weeks, or keep the orchid in a water tray constantly. Make sure that the roots do not touch the water tray or it will then constantly be absorbing too much water.

In terms of fertilizing, try to do this before your orchid blooms so it blooms longer. Once it has bloomed, you don’t need to fertilize it any longer. If you prune your orchid carefully by snipping off the old blooms, it will keep its flowers longer. You will then be able to see a second set of flowers develop. With the right care, your orchid will provide you with satisfaction, as it gives you lots of blooms throughout the flowering season.
