Oktoberfest is pretty soon, in fact it starts in a couple of weeks in Munich then lasts for some weeks. It is a good festival to go to and has become such a well-liked occasion that folks throughout the world like to create their own Oktoberfest in their own nations, cities and homes. The normal Oktoberfest serving costume is based on the Dirndl. This is a traditional dress for ladies in Southern Germany and most of the nations that can be found across the Alps range of mountains. Thus this includes areas of Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
The Dirndl was formerly a peasant type dress and in many cases a housewives dress. The people that wore such gear could be working on their family farms or in the house on regular tasks. The Dirndl was considered an effective general purpose dress for doing all forms of everyday jobs from milking cows to sweeping the floor.

It was made up of a peasant style top, customarily in a plain white color with ruffled, short sleeves. Round the chemise will be a do up bodice that may be loosened or tightened contingent on what you were doing or if the climate was warm. A long, ankle length skirt was the next part of the Dirndl outfit. This skirt was made from a plain colored, strong textile that might last for years and lots of heavy use. An apron was almost compulsory for a dirndl costume and would come in useful for all kinds of tasks. It could also keep the skirt from getting filthy at times.
The female servers at the Oktoberfest generally dress in something like the dirndl but as they are client facing type positions the costumes they have on are usually slightly more racy. The skirt is shorter and there may be a lace slip underneath to offer it a bit of bounce and definition.
All varieties of derivations on the Bavarian serving outfit have been fashioned. Several are fairly authentic while some have just a few similarities.
