cultivated morning glory’s?
my dog has developed a taste for morning glory vines. are they toxic to dogs? i’ve heard they can cause hallucinations from eating seeds. do i need to remove them all?
Morning glory plants, AKA Ipomoea spp. contain alkaloids in all parts, the leaves, flowers and seeds. The ASPCA list Ipomoea as toxic to cats and dogs. Poisoning symptoms can include gastrointestinal upset, agitation, tremors, disorientation, ataxia, anorexia. The seeds may cause hallucination and/or diarrhea.
If your pet has eaten a morning glory, call the vet immediately.
The best resources I have found about plants poisonous to animals include Indiana Plants Poisonous to Livestock and Pets – http://www.vet.purdue.edu/toxic/cover1.htm , Cornell Univ. Plants Poisonous to Livestock and other Animals – http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/ and the American Society of Prevention and Cruelty to Animals Poison Control Center – http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/
