The Jack Russell terrier is blessed with a fabulous personality. They are tremendously sweet and social, demonstrating great affection and warmth for their owners. They never fail to give warm, friendly greetings and also known for their extreme loyalty. They’re very active and love to play, and they don’t like to sit still for too long. Jack Russell Behaviour – The Bad

However, no dog is perfect and the Jack Russell has its share of negative traits. Jacks were originally bred to be hunting dogs and because of this they can still be aggressive today, especially with other dogs. They’re very territorial and their fearless nature means that they won’t back down from a fight – something that could be difficult if they start on dogs bigger than they are. In a similar respect, while they are very loyal, this loyalty makes them extremely protective of their owners when rival dogs intrude upon their territory.

In spite of these negative attributes, the positives a Jack Russell can bring to your life, more than make up for minor inconveniences. Moreover, with the right training this bad behavior can be solved by encouraging his good tendencies and discouraging against the bad.

It all comes down to time, patience, consistency and proper training. You need to start moulding your dog from an early age – like the rest of us, once habits have been learned they’re much harder to unlearn. Indeed, by putting your dog on the right track from the first day you bring him home, you’ll increase your odds of him developing into an excellent companion and have longer to enjoy your time together.

The Significance Of Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is the secret for influencing your Jack Russell’s behavior. In other words, it’s very important to praise good behavior and reprimand any misbehaving. Remember that Jacks love attention, even the attention they get when being punished. The most effective way of punishing them is by totally ignoring them and vigorously praising them anytime they do something good. Eventually your dog will learn to equate good behavior with reward and bad behavior with unresponsiveness, which should encourage him to be good for life.

Leader Of The Pack

It’s important that you assert your dominance at all times, or else your dog will think that he’s the leader of the pack and could become unruly and even aggressive. The best way for your dog to learn his role is by feeding him after you eat and only greeting him when you want to. Soon your dog will understand his status within the house and should be responsive of your commands.

Of course, in some cases it might be necessary to call in the professionals. It’s often best to take your puppy to obedience classes as soon as you can, but if you’ve left it too late and they’re misbehaving in adulthood then a trained behavioural modification expert could be required – depending on the severity of his disobedience, of course.

So, the general Jack Russell behaviour can be quite a mixed bag, but it’s nothing that a bit of training can’t fix. To get the best results for your Jack, keep him on a consistent training program, provide him with lots of positive reinforcement and soon he’ll be the dog he was meant to be.
