How to Go About Organic Lawn Care

We have seen a huge increase in the number of people who are keen on knowing how they can go about organic lawn care. These are typically people who fall in love with the concept of organic lawn maintenance, upon learning the potential monetary savings they can make, while also protecting the environment through organic lawn care. This discussion then, briefly explores how organic lawn maintenance can be carried out, in order to attain reasonably good results.

It is presumed that everyone is already acquainted with the idea that a lawn is a special type of garden, on which grasses (and perhaps a few trees) are planted. The lawn is meant to improve the aesthetic appeal of the yard (or whatever other space) on which it is established, and can also be used for recreational purposes as a ‘resting place.’ It is also presumed that everyone is already acquainted with the basic concept of organic lawn care. That is where organic lawn care would turn out to be what we end up with when we try to minimize chemical (and other inorganic compound) usage in the course of our lawn maintenance efforts.

At the ground preparation stage, rather than burning whatever vegetation that may be already growing on the yard where a lawn is to be established, the organic approach would be to mechanically pull out the vegetation. Alternatively, and better still, the vegetation can be ploughed into the soil, where it is bound to decay, thus turning into the much needed manure and improving the soil structure. In the inorganic approach to lawn maintenance, the vegetation on ground would simply be burned off; knowing that even if soil fertility is messed up within the process, there is still opportunity to make up for the fertility loss through the ultra-efficient chemical fertilizers.

At the grass planting stage, rather than treating the grass seeds with chemicals before broadcasting them, an allowance can be made (by planting slightly more seeds), for those that may get messed up by organisms resident in the soil. It is also possible to select grass varieties which germinate faster, thus lowering the probability of them being messed up before germination.

When it comes to lawn fertilization, the organic lawn care approach is about using organic manures as much as possible, rather than using chemical lawn fertilizers. Sometimes, proper lawn soil analysis may reveal that the lawn soil is actually rich in all nutrients necessary for the grasses to be planted to thrive. In that case, any thought of lawn fertilization (organic or otherwise) would be clearly superfluous. But where such fertilization has to be done, the keys to getting it right would be in selecting the right type of organic manures. There are two primary sources of organic manures, namely plant sources and animal sources. The objective in either case is to get the plant waste or the animal waste (as may be the case) to decompose, in the process releasing the nutrients in such waste to the soil on which the lawn is to be established.

In terms of pest control, organic lawn care is about ensuring that you leverage on the cultural practices that minimize pest attacks. And in terms of weed control, organic lawn care is similarly about leveraging on cultural practices which discourage weed growth, as well as mechanical (as opposed to chemical) weed removal.
