Ovipositional Preference Of Callosobruchus Maculatus Between Fresh Chick Pea Seeds And Seeds Having Previously Laid Eggs And Healthy Seeds Verses Seed
Introduction: – The pulses have played vital rule in the improvement of agricultural economy of the country. Chickpea is the most preferred legume cultivating in India. The main constrain for production of chickpea is post harvest loss during storage. C.maculatus is the most important pest of chick pea during storage. The grub caused tremendous loss by feeding, contaminating seeds. The infested seeds loss its viability for germination and cannot be consumed. The damage caused by the insect can only be determined from its ovipositional behaviour. Preference and non preference of host and choice of ovipositional sites reflects the behaviour of insect. Ovipositional behaviour of adult female is a key factor in determining the number of egg laid and further damage on seeds. Keeping all this in mind the experiment was conducted to overcome this dangerous pest attack.
Material and Method :- The experiment was conducted at laboratory condition in the Deptt. of Entomology, IGKV, Raipur during 2007. During the experiment one set of fresh chick pea seeds variety dollar were kept in one petridish while in another set seeds having previously laid eggs by other female were kept. After that in all cases 3 pairs of newly emerged insects were released and observed for maximum egg laying. The experiment in each case was repeated for 10 times and recorded.
Result and Discussion :- In the present investigation it was observed that the female preferred to lay more eggs on fresh seeds (7.3 eggs/seed) while only 1.2 eggs/seed was laid by female on seeds having previously laid eggs. It has clearly been found that the female did not prefer to lay eggs on seeds having previously laid eggs by another female. From this study it can well be said that more female do not lay eggs on same seed. Similar finding also reported by Messina and Renwick (1985a) while Ofuya (1989) reported that the female C.maculatus were able to discriminate between varying number of larvae before oviposition and they prefer seeds without any larvae.
