There are a number of specialties inside the world of food science. Three of the main sub-disciplines can easily be defined by what they work on. They are Soil, Plant and Animal Scientists.
All three have similarities. They all study food production. They all work for food concerns, universities or governmental agencies. They develop new nutritional sources, such as algae, uncover undesirable hormones, preservatives and additives, and improve storage and distribution. Those with a more artistic flair are turning cooking into a science. Another common job is as health inspectors for state or federal agencies. When it comes to differentiating the three subspecialties, their titles do say a lot. For starters, soil scientists study the soil to maximize plant growth. This means taking samples and surveying land to uncover what crops would work best, finding out the best crop rotation, preventing erosion, and other topological issues. Not only do they usually have biological and nutritional expertise, but boost their knowledge with studies in the ecological, geographical and geological fields of studies.
Plant scientists specialize in flora and food-yielding crops. They are additionally known as crop scientists or agronomists. They focus on crop yield, nutritional value, plant diseases and parasites among correspondingly associated subjects. A popular arena of study these days is to return to the work of past greats such as Darwin and Mendel on genetics. Another new popular area of study is applying biotech to plant production. They concentrate on such subjects as biology, health sciences, ecology and all other things related to food. Specialization only comes in on the post-grad level. Because of this, one could streamline the entire education affair by finding a six year program at an on campus or online school (many times state run or sponsored). A good reason for this is while there are a number of schools that offer many of the courses a student will want, they may not have the exact specialization one wants to go into. Thanks to the latest developments in distance learning, this problem is now effectively a thing of the past.
Salaries depend in one’s area of specialization. It also depends on if one works in the corporate or public sector. For example, plant scientists working for a federal agency average $80,000 a year. Animal scientists, by comparison, make a little under $105,000. In the corporate world, animal scientists average over $55,000, while both plant and soil scientists average over $58,000.Researching distance learning masters will work in your favor.
It should always be remembered that even though the specializations are different, all are considered food scientists . Another thing they all have in common is there will be a lot of interest for some time to come.
