Bacterial Vaginosis Remedies

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection occurring in women of childbearing ages (17-45). According to the World Health Organization, in 2006, this infection accounted for more than 10 million office visits. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is interrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of specific bacteria. The vagina normally contains mostly healthy, positive bacteria and very little harmful, negative bacteria. BV develops and “outbreaks” when there is an increase in these harmful bacteria, resulting in less positive, healthy bacteria.

The cause of bacterial vaginosis is not clearly understood or defined by the medical profession. It is believed to be caused, most likely, by one of the following:

- Having a new sex partner or multiple sex partners

- Douching

- Using an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control

- Not using a condom

These activities do cause the introduction of harmful, negative bacteria into the vagina, therefore this is the “best guess” doctors can lend to the causes of bacterial vaginosis. It is clear that women do not contract it through toilet seats, bedding, and swimming pools or touching other people.
