making a cottage garden
A cottage garden is like an impressionist painting-its not through technical brilliance that the viewer is impressed but through the overall impression created by the sum of the gardens parts.Therefore herbs,vegetables and flowers can be combined into a very effective cottage garden with little regard for the colour wheel.However I have found that pink and yellow do clash in my opinion,but this is purely subjective.An example of this was when Toby Buckland of gardeners world combined cerinthe(pink) and bidens (yellow)which had his co-presenter joe swift literally spitting out his tea!
To create a cottage garden you must combine evergreens,perennials and annuals in a mix that allows interest in all the seasons.This is how i managed my cottage garden-In spring I used a combination of red tulips and blue forget me nots but you could just as easily use black tulips and white forget me nots.Once the tulips go over leave their foliage to allow the plant to photosynthesize and let the forget me nots seed.Only leave a few forget me nots as they seed prolifically.In May i added daisys,dianthus(deep red) and geraniums to last until mid-summer.Finally in mid-summer I added wild bergamot and chocolate cosmos(it has a chocolate scent!).These additions add seasonal interest to the bare bones of the garden which are a buddleia,euphorbia,myrtle and stipa arundinacea.The froth is made up of perennials such as oriental poppies,lillies,salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’,french and english lavender,iris,marshmallow and echinacea.
A cottage plant is usually informal but is not completely garish.For example,nigella is a cottage plant because of the delicacy of its flowers and the frothyness of its foliage but salvia splendens is not as it is too overpowering(better left to 1970s bedding schemes!).Whether exotic plants fit in is difficult to say-hot late summer borders with cannas,hedychriums and ricinus are cottage gardens definitely,mainly thanks to christopherb lloydd,but they lack the purity of the typically english garden identified by rosemary verey and copied by british colonizers the world over such as alchemilla mollis,catmint,calendula,poppies,nigella,jasmine.Ofcourse roses are typical of a cottage garden but they are unpracticable in a true cottage garden because they require chemicals.In a true cottage garden chemicals are unnecessary unlike in commercial horticulture where it is profit that is king and not pleasure.As carol klein said ‘if i sprayed all the aphids i would have no blue tits!’
Finally, maintenence-a cottage garden with successional planting needs a lot of maintaining.watering is vital in hot spells and a sprinkling of high potassium feed is also important to improve flowering in tandem with deadheading to trick the plant into producing more flowers.Weeds are a constant threat but youll be surprised what pops up!Ultimately this is where I come in as a professional horticulturalist!
