What kind of oak tree has golfball-sized, mottled green seedballs or fruits?

Today we were on our walk (we live in central Florida, near Tampa Bay) and found a tree which had numerous seed balls or fruits hanging from single slender branches. They are not galls (I know what those are) and when you open them up, there’s a whitish, puffball-looking thing inside. The tree may be a laurel oak, but we’re not sure on that one. The bark looks like oak bark. Thanks!!

A photo would definitely help. From just the description, I’m not convinced that you aren’t seeing an old gall.

A photo of the tree/leaves/bark might help too – it’s possible that this wasn’t an oak at all, and the identity might help narrow down the “seedballs”.
