Rubekia and Bee balm?
I have a small garden where we planted some bee balm, and Rubekia last summer. However, right now I see some bee balm like weeds and lots of empty pockets. Here I would like to see some ground covers, nice grass and other perennials. But I am afraid to dig not knowing what I might damage while trying to fill in the empty pockets. There are times when I am digging I am seeing lots of roots. Any suggestions how I can do this without damaging what is already planted. I dont want to wait three months for these plants to bloom.
Bee Balm grows and spreads from the roots spreading. In my experience when I try to pull it up it is all connected like an underground vine. Now is when I would deal with it. Try pulling some up and transplant it to where you want it to be. You can cut the roots or underground vines to the size that you want. Water well after you move the bee balm. Since it’s still short i hope still spring growth, it should be fine. It’s later in the summer that moving a plant will stress it. I have transplanted in the summer but I will always cut the stems back after the transplant or they usually wilt real bad. I made the mistake of cutting my bee balm way back one year hoping it would make a shorter bushier plant and then it wouldn’t bloom. But just that year that i cut it back. I have the pink colour Marshells Delight.
Rubekia can be divided every 2 or three years.
